In 2009, I had the opportunity for a walking tour of the nearly finished Pittsburgh Subway expansion project.
This subway project was a pair of 22 foot concrete tunnels connecting the City of Pittsburgh to the Northside near Heinz Feild going under the Allegheny River.
I got the opportunity to take this tour becuase my neighbor, a Director for the County, asked if I wanted to go. Obviously, I could not pass up this chance.
The two tunnels are 22 feet in diameter and about 22 feet UNDER the Allegheny river bed. The tunnels are made by drilling and sleeving along the way and installing the 7 concrete ring sections together - so when the drilling machine gets to the other side, the tunnel is complete.
